Create my own Apple ID

In order to begin downloading and trying out new iPad apps, you will need to create your own Apple ID.  An Apple ID gives you access to downloading items from the App Store, iTunes, iBooks, and iTunesU.  It also gives you an account in iCloud that can be used to transfer items between your iPad, computer, and even the Apple TVs.  We will be using our RSU 20 email accounts to create our Apple IDs.  We will be creating our Apple ID through a process that involves downloading a free app to our iPad.  This allows us to create an account without having to tie in our personal credit card information.  I would not recommend tying your personal credit card information to this account.

Okay, let's get started!  Let's get into the App Store (icon is above), where you'll see something like this:

The App Store can be a little overwhelming, given how busy-looking it is.  Apple regularly updates and curates collections of apps based on themes (including education-related and free app collections), so it's worth checking out the "Featured" page as well as the "Top Charts" and "Explore" sections that you see on the bottom of your screen.

We can also search for apps that we want to add by using the search box in the top-right corner.  A free app that comes to mind is the Bangor Daily News app, so I'm going to search for that (don't worry, anything that you add now can be deleted later).

Hit the search button when you're done, and you'll be directed to the search results.   There is the BDN app!  You can either tap on the "Get" button to download the app immediately, or you can tap anywhere else inside that box to see more information about that app, including reviews and related apps.

Anyways, when you press the "Get" button, you'll be prompted to sign in to the App Store.  Let's create a new Apple ID, using our RSU 20 email accounts.

You will be guided through the process of creating your account.  When you are done, the app will begin downloading, the "Get" button will change, and when it is done, there will be a new app on your home screen!

Make sure to keep your Apple ID login information handy!
